Call to Action: Defund Hate

indivisible defund hateIndivisible Morris is hosting a Rally to Defund Hate.

What: Defund Hate Rally and Support of Our Hispanic Community
When: Friday, September 13th, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
Where: Morris Public Library Mall, Morris, MN
You can RSVP Here.

We’re not going to let Trump, his administration or anyone on the right use fearmongering and scare tactics to divide us and turn us against our neighbors coming to the US for help. From caging children and families at the border and refusing them access to basic necessities like showers and toothbrushes, to launching raids that rip people away from homes where they’ve lived years or even decades, to attempting to illegally block asylum, it’s clear that the Trump administration has focused its resources on maximizing harm to immigrant communities.

Congress must fight the atrocities Trump is committing at the Southern border and throughout this country in our name. We’ll write, collect and deliver postcards to Congressman Collin Peterson asking that he cut the funding to the agencies that most drive these abuses, ICE and CBP. It’s time to let Peterson know that he needs to help pass a 2020 spending bill that finally puts an end to DHS’s ability to manipulate the appropriations process to expand the immigration detention and deportation systems.

Join us on Friday, September 13, 5:00 – 6:30 pm, on the Morris Public Library Mall, as we, along with other Indivisible groups all across the nation, rally together and voice our opposition to the continued funding of forces designed to separate families and destroy lives. We’re Indivisible and together we’re going to #DefundHate.

After the rally, we urge everyone to attend the annual Lazos Dinner to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and show support for all members of our community. The event is Friday, September 13, 5:30 – 8:30 pm, Faith Lutheran Church, 108 W 5th St, Morris, Mn. Tickets sold at the door: Adults $10, Children $8. You can find more information below.

Close ICE Camps & Re-unite families

Close ICE Camps & Re-unite families

Tuesday, July 2 , 2019

5:30 – 6:00 pm

Morris Library Mall, 102 E 6th Street, Morris MN

Come out and be part of a nationwide protest against ICE detention camps. Photos of the event will be sent to our rep Collin Peterson so he knows his constituents want Congress to #CloseTheCamps

Children denied soap and toothbrushes, crowded into unsafe conditions. Separated from their families, subject to cruel treatment that leads to lasting traumas. And some dying in custody—or dying with parents as they cross the Rio Grande.

We’ve seen the images and heard the stories coming out of child detention centers. Horrifically, these conditions aren’t an accident. They are the byproduct of an intentional strategy by the Trump administration to terrorize immigrant communities and criminalize immigration—from imprisoning children in inhumane conditions to threatening widespread raids to break up families to covering up reports of immigrants dying in U.S. custody and abuses by ICE and CBP agents.

It’s going to take all of us to close the camps.

This Tuesday, July 2, while members of Congress are home for the Fourth of July holiday, we will gather in protest. Our demands:

1. Close the Camps
2. Not One Dollar for Family Detention and Deportation
3. Bear Witness and Reunite Families

Thank you for taking action.

Indivisible Morris members have consistently listed the environment as a top priority. Now you have a chance to support local efforts to promote greater sustainability and climate protection. On Thursday, June 6, 2019, Indivisible Morris will hold a member meeting that will focus on environmental protection.

Morris City Manager, Blaine Hill, will explicate efforts made by the Morris community to be “nationally recognized as an innovation leader in energy, transportation, and waste reduction and recycling.” The City of Morris is one of five communities across the state that is participating in the Climate Smart Municipalities (CSM) program through the University of Minnesota. Morris is partnered with Saerbeck, Germany. A small, rural community like Morris, Saerbeck is a leader in renewable energy and energy efficiency and was the first winner of the prestigious European Energy Prize. The City of Morris, UMM, Stevens County, SCMC, the public school system, and area businesses are all involved in this effort which has been labeled the Morris Model. The discussion will include concrete steps citizens can take to support the initiative and positively impact the environment.

This is your opportunity to ask questions, seek clarification, and take action.

There will also be break-out groups on other topics, including follow-up with the hiring of the new Morris Area School Superintendent.

“Whose House? Our House!” Event; Thursday, January 3, 2019.

United States Capitol

Let’s make some noise!

January 3 is the first day of the 116th Congress. Democrats will use the first 100 days to communicate what they are for and what they will deliver if they fully take back power in 2020. And because of the power Indivisible has built, we’ve got an opportunity to influence that agenda. To do so, we need to flex our movement muscle and make our voice loud and clear from the very beginning. That is why groups all over the country are organizing “Whose House? Our House!” events on January 3. Indivisible Morris is hosting one, too!

“Whose House? Our House!”
Stone’s Throw Cafe, 506 Atlantic Ave, Morris, Minnesota 56267
January 3, 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

Come help us make some noise in Morris! BRING A FRIEND! We’ll let you know more about a robust democracy reform bill (H.R. 1) expected to be the first major legislative effort in a Democratically-controlled House.

Then we’ll provide some easy, creative ways for you to tell Congressman Collin Peterson: We are here, we are paying attention, and we will hold you accountable for what you do. And what we want you to do is to help pass the biggest, boldest, most progressive reform package possible. No watering it down. No breaking it up.

We’ll let Peterson know that, during the next 2 years, we expect him to prioritize 1) undoing the damage done by the Trump Administration and 2) creating institutions in which we are all represented, included, and protected.

We are not a moment. We are a MOVEMENT. We will speak out in a loud, coordinated and powerful voice on January 3rd.

Thank you for taking action,

Call to Action

The_Supreme_Court

Call your Senators and tell them to oppose any Supreme Court nominee.

Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement sets up a monumental shift in the balance of the Supreme Court. Kennedy was often (but not always) a moderating force on the Court, and was key to many instrumental decisions on issues that affect us all. If Trump successfully installs an extreme justice to fill that seat, the Court will rubber stamp the Trump agenda for a generation to come. We don’t need to wait to hear who the nominee is—Trump has already put out a list he will choose from, and the entire list is unacceptable.

THE HARD TRUTH: THERE IS NO PROCEDURAL TOOL TO STOP

The last time there was a vacancy on the Supreme Court, it was after Justice Scalia passed away and Mitch McConnell used an unprecedented level of obstruction to keep President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, from so much as having a hearing in the Senate. This kept the seat vacant for over a year, until Trump became president and nominated Neil Gorsuch.

Up until that point, Senate rules required Supreme Court nominees to get 60 votes to be confirmed to the bench. But McConnell didn’t have 60 votes—so he changed the rules, using the so-called “nuclear option,” so that nominees required only a majority. That is still the Senate’s rule today. And because there are currently 51 Republican Senators, that means they have the votes to confirm Trump’s nominee. Unless we stop them.

The only way we can defeat Trump’s nominee is to:

  1. Get to 51 votes. To start, we need 49 “no” votes from EVERY SINGLE SENATE DEMOCRAT to have a fighting chance.

Tell Senators Klobuchar and Smith to commit immediately to opposing anyone that Trump nominates from his short list. Each and every pick on that list is an extremist who would dismantle our health care and the right to choose. Both Senators have already called for the Republican majority to wait to fill the vacancy until after the November election, but it is important to let them know you are with them on this issue. Thank them for standing strong and let them know that you consider opposition to be patriotism, not obstructionism.

CALL SCRIPT FOR ALL DEMOCRATIC SENATORS:

Caller: Hello! My name is ___ and I’m calling from [part of state]. Can you please tell me what Senator ___ plans to do about the Supreme Court vacancy?

Staffer: Hello, nice to talk with you! The Senator plans to vote against Trump’s Supreme Court nominee. The stakes are too high.

Caller: Thank you! I’m very glad to hear that. Too much hangs in the balance to let Trump fill this seat with someone from his list of totally unqualified, extreme judges. That includes a woman’s right to choose, the Affordable Care Act, and marriage equality. I want Senator ___ to use every tool at his/her disposal to stop Trump from filling this vacancy with anyone on this list.

Staffer: Thank you, the Senator agrees with you. I’ll make sure they get your message.

PLEASE MAKE THE CALL NOW.

Senator Klobuchar: (202) 224-3244

Senator Tina Smith: (202) 224-5641

(Then stay tuned for Step 2…)
